In a show of support for the pilgrims, Cairo Bank, in partnership with the Uganda Bureau of Hajj Affairs, provided special bags for carrying personal documents. The bags were officially handed over by Cairo Bank’s Executive Director, Sylvia Jagwe Owachi, in a ceremony at the Wandegeya Mosque attended by prominent figures in the Muslim community, including Sheikh Ssemambo, the Mufti of Uganda, and the guest of honour: Prince Kassim Nakibinge Kakungulu, Titular Leader of the Muslim community in Uganda.
Speaking at the event, Sylvia Jagwe Owachi emphasized the importance of supporting the pilgrims. “These bags are not just for carrying documents; they symbolize our commitment to ensuring that our pilgrims travel with ease and dignity. We are honoured to partner with the Uganda Bureau of Hajj Affairs in this noble cause,” Sylvia Jagwe Owachi stated.
Sheikh Ssemambo expressed gratitude on behalf of the Muslim community, highlighting the significance of Hajj as the fifth pillar of Islam. “Every Muslim believer must make the pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime. The support from Cairo Bank and the Uganda Bureau of Hajj Affairs is invaluable in helping our pilgrims fulfil this religious obligation,” he said.
Prince Kassim Nakibinge Kakungulu also lauded the initiative, noting that such partnerships enhance the spiritual journey of the pilgrims. “This collaboration is a testament to the strength and unity of our community. It ensures that our pilgrims are well-prepared and can focus on their spiritual duties,” he remarked.
Hajj is the annual pilgrimage made by Muslims to the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia. It takes place during Dhu’al-Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic calendar, usually in June or July. Millions of Muslims from around the world gather in Mecca to perform Hajj, which includes activities such as walking around the holy house (Kaaba) and between the hills of Safa and Marwa seven times, covering approximately 3.15 kilometres, and slaughtering animals.
As the pilgrims prepare for this sacred journey, the combined efforts of the UCAA, Cairo Bank, and the Uganda Bureau of Hajj Affairs aim to ensure a smooth and dignified travel experience.
